Church and Convent of St. Francis of Assisi

The history of the magnificent Church of St. Francis of Assisi and its conventual complex in Brescia is a unique historical-artistic treasure. The Franciscan presence in the city dates back to the 13th century; it is said that the very Poverello of Assisi, returning from a meeting in Bergamo with St. Dominic, stayed for a few days in Brescia, at the Church of St. George. Thomas of Celano, in his biography, confirms this presence, mentioning the arrival of a friar from Brescia to Siena in 1226.

Since September 12, 1261, the Conventual Friars Minor have been a constant presence in Ravenna, linking their history to the Basilica of St. Francis. Originally dedicated to the Holy Apostles and later to St. Peter, the basilica dates back to the mid-5th century AD. Very little remains of the original Paleochristian church, due to the numerous reconstructions that took place over the centuries.

Saint Anthony Shrines

The splendid Saint Anthony Shrines stand in the places on the outskirts of Padua where Anthony spent the final days of his life. It was here, in fact, that the Saint lived the last month of his existence, as a guest of Count Tiso, who had previously welcomed a group of Franciscan friars. From Camposampiero, on 13 June 1231, sensing that the end was near, Anthony asked his fellow friars to take him to the convent in the city.

The history of the Friars Minor in Venezia, affectionately known as the “frari,” began around 1200. Initially, the Most Serene Republic granted them a modest oratory in a marshy area. However, the growing community soon made it necessary to build a larger church, erected around 1250.
